Scissors in hand, you cut the base of the plant, bringing it over to the sink to snip off the leaves for eating. You have a bright beautiful salad, ready for dinner. You remove the (now empty) yCube. It\u2019s the end of the cycle for that plant, right?<br \/>\n<br \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<center><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/roxanneawest_1637338006994949_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center>\t<\/p>\n<p>\nActually, it\u2019s just the beginning. Most plants (as traditional vegetable gardeners will know) produce enough food for <a href=\"https:\/\/help.mygardyn.com\/en\/articles\/1782337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continual harvests<\/a> for 3 months or more! This is how our grandparents (and those before them), gardened. Caring for the same plant and letting it live out its full life while reaping the rewards of repeated harvests. Instead of cutting off the whole plant or cutting off the stalk clip away at the larger, outer leaves at a point close to the base. Make sure to leave some leaves in the middle to keep the plant producing. The same goes for herbs, fruiting plants and flowers.<br \/>\n<br \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Basil-Figure-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\t<\/center><\/p>\n<p>\nTake <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/basil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basil<\/a> for example. When harvesting basil (and similar plants such as <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/sage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sage<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/oregano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oregano<\/a>), look for the largest leaves on a stem. Cut below them and above the smaller leaves. Now these small leaves will grow into larger ones, and the process gets repeated with each harvest.\u00a0<br \/>\n<br \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Cherry-Tomatoes-Suckers.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\t<\/center><\/p>\n<p>\nFor fruiting plants, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/cherry-tomatoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cherry tomatoes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/sweet-peppers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peppers<\/a>, etc., harvesting is pretty straightforward. Simply pluck the tomatoes, peppers, etc. off of the plant. To keep it producing, prune small stems to send all food and energy to the larger stems (<a href=\"https:\/\/help.mygardyn.com\/en\/articles\/1770561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kelby<\/a> will remind you to do this!).\u00a0<br \/>\n<br \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Campanula.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\nWhen it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/plant-book\/campanula-flower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flowers<\/a> and similar plants), cutting back dead or fading flower heads will encourage more growth &#8211; and even more flowers!\u00a0<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIn general, cutting off any dead or fading parts will encourage all of your plants to be happy, healthy, and bountiful for weeks and months.
